Auto insurance is a crucial aspect of vehicle ownership, offering financial protection when collisions, theft, weather, or liability claims arise. Yet policies are often described with shorthand that hides important details. This guide maps the most common coverages so you can compare quotes with confidence.
Start with liability
Bodily injury and property damage liability pay others when you are legally responsible for an accident. States set minimum limits, but minimums may be too low if assets or future earnings could be at risk. Think of liability as protection for your financial life—not just a line item on a card.
Physical damage: collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair or replace your vehicle after an accident with another car or object, subject to your deductible. Comprehensive covers non-collision events such as theft, vandalism, fire, hail, or animal strikes—also subject to a deductible.
If you lease or finance, your lender may require both. If your car’s market value is modest and you could replace it out of pocket, you might consider dropping them—talk through the trade-offs with a licensed professional.
Uninsured & underinsured motorist coverage
Not every driver carries adequate insurance. Uninsured motorist (UM) and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage can pay for injuries—and sometimes property damage—when the at-fault party cannot. In hit-and-run scenarios, UM may be especially important depending on state rules.
Medical coverages & extras
Depending on your state and carrier, you may see personal injury protection (PIP), medical payments (MedPay), rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, or gap coverage. Each solves a different problem: quick medical bills, temporary transportation, towing, or paying off a loan when a car is totaled.
How to read your declarations page
Your dec page lists each coverage, per-person and per-accident limits, deductibles, and premium slices. When comparing quotes, align limits and deductibles so you are evaluating true apples-to-apples value—not just the bottom-line price.
